Remember the film Bed of Roses from January 1996? Probably not. It was a romantic drama about a driven career woman, played by Mary Stuart Masterson, who is romanced by a shy florist, played by Christian Slater. I enjoyed the film but what stuck with me was the song that played over the closing credits.
Scarlet’s “Independent Love Song” blew me away. This song has a fantastic blend of music and vocals that have some amazing crescendos. I had to buy the movie soundtrack to get this song since it was way before iTunes was around to let you buy a single track from a CD. Today the song remains in heavy rotation on my iPod and I decided to share it with all of you today.
The video isn’t great (rather blah actually for a mid-90s video) but you can check out the song and see if you like it as much as I do.
I had the same reaction after seeing the movie. I purchased the cd the next day. As a musicain, what strikes me about the song is the jump from a minor 3rd to major 3rd at the beginning of the chorus. This trick has a way of “pulling” you into the song. It is a great song and I just hate that one can not find songwriting credits for this song on the internet. So, I will credit them. Written by Cheryl Parker and Joe Youle, Performed by Scarlet. I still am unable to find who produced the song. To me, that’s as important as who performed it. Thanks for adding this great song.
