This week on Jeff & Will’s Big Gay Fiction Podcast, our special guest, author and publisher J.M. Snyder, asked “What’s your favorite read outside the m/m genre?”
While I do focus the majority of my reading in the gay romance genre–not only do I enjoy it but since I write in the genre it’s important to see what else is being done–I do read other things too.
There’s a far bit of non-fiction reading around writing, especially the business of writing as I learn as much as I can about becoming an author entrepreneur. Besides that I read a far bit in young adult as well as books from my favorite general fiction authors like Jay McInerney and Michael Chabon.
I’m discovering that I’m still in to sci-fi, too. In my writer’s group, currently made up of seven people, I’m the only one who primarily writes gay romance. The new member, a friend of mine, writes a bit in the genre, but he also fits in great with the rest of the group who lean towards sci-fi and fantasy. I’ve loved reading the work from the group members and it’s reminded me that I used to read a lot of sci-fi/fantasy when I was a teenager. So it’s possible I may pick up more of that in the future as well.
What do you read out side m/m? The best place to answer the question this week is over on the episode page since you’ll find the opportunity to enter the Rafflecopter giveaway for a free ebook copy of Make the Right Choice, an ebook of mine that just came out this past week (and is firmly in the gay romance genre).
Harry Potter and Maeve Binchy. Aside from that, largely the classics. A lot of the time I find myself scanning iBooks at 10:30 at night when I’m looking for something new to me. Free on iBooks = expired copyright = classic.
I’m also a big Star Trek fanfic reader. Though I’m definitely in the m/m genre in that fandom. 🙂
