For the past six weeks I’ve been working with one of the co-writers of Hockey The Musical! to be a part of an event the musical is having out on Long Island. Hockey The Musical is brand new and secured a spot at this July’s Toronto Fringe Festival and they are having a fund raiser to help cover production costs. Co-writer Rick Wilson reached out to the New York City Gay Hockey Association to see if we could get a team together to take part in an exhibition Gay vs. Straight game. It’s Hockey and it’s a Musical… so of course I’m in for that. Next Saturday afternoon our NYCGHA All-Star team is headed to the Long Beach Ice Arena for a 2 period game against the Straight Arrows, plus we’ll get to see a bit of the musical since there will be a performance as well. Oh cool does this sound!

Hockey The Musical! also has a gay storyline, hence the challenge game. Here’s the synopsis from the its website: The Minnesota Turtles are one of the best teams in the United Hockey League, and their All Stars Pavel Riccardino and Oleg Peckor are rapidly propelling their team toward the playoffs. However, on the heels of Riccardino’s celebratory scoring of his first career hat trick, scandal hits him, challenging his very identity. Relationships with his teammates become strained, testing the team’s loyalty to him, to one another, and to the game they all love. In the age of the Internet, information spreads faster than a puck travels at its highest speeds. How can athletes maintain their lives, relationships, and dignity when the media spins “truths” which shape and alter who they are and who they are perceived to be? What is the price of an athlete’s fame and the cost of keeping his truths secret?

To me it sounds a bit like Take Me Out, but with hockey and music. There are a couple of songs posted on the website so you preview it for yourself. And, if you’re in the area next weekend, come on out. Information about the event is on that website too. Of course I’ll post after the event too so you know how it all turned out! I think it’s going to be a great time.
