There are moments in theatre (too few, honestly) that can cause goosebumps. One of those moments comes at the end of the first act of Wicked, the musical about what was going on in Oz before Dorothy arrived. The set up is pretty simple, Elphaba discovers that the Wizard is trying to silence all the talking animals throughout the kingdom and she decides that the great and powerful Oz must be stopped. She tries to enlist the help of her friend Glinda, but Glinda balks at going against the “government.” The result is “Defying Gravity,” which is not only an inspirational song between friends but also shows Elphaba taking flight for the first time. Here is Wicked’s performance from the 2004 Tony Awards… see if you don’t get goosebumps too!<
