Someone (a stone cold genius!) came up with this during auto-mat/vending machine craze of the 40’s and 50’s. They were probably meant for locations without a newsstand or drugstore (with a ubiquitous paperback rack) nearby. Sadly, the book-o-mat never took off. Customers didn’t like that you weren’t able to browse the selections before making a purchase.
