As temperatures in Manhattan hit 100 yesterday afternoon the Boxers took to the ice at Sky Rink, which felt more like a sauna with an ice floor. After winning in OT in our first outing against the Thundercats, we emerged victorious in regulation play this time with a score of 4-1.
This was a hard fought game and I think a lot of credit goes to our goalie for keeping the score in check. The Thundercats had several breakaways and there was a lot of scrapping in front of our net. But between the team, despite having issues getting the puck cleared effectively, pulled off the victory. A lot of that credit belongs to our goalie who did a superb job of being the last line of defense.
I enjoyed playing this game. I made several good plays and, thankfully, even the risky/poor choices were saved by my teammates, especially my defensive partner Bill, goalie Mike and center Jeff. The game got more difficult to play as it went on too. The heavy air and heat definitely took a toll on me, but I persevered, kept the shifts short, and luckily didn’t make any horrific mistakes.
Next week is a Boxers double header with a game on Friday night and a game on Saturday afternoon. Next week is also a sad week in my hockey world. It’s the last week for Ronnie’s Ice so, despite the Friday night game, I will be on hand for the finale of this Sky Rink institution.
